Easy Wood Finishing – With wood projects at home, one of the decisions to be made comes down to how to provide a suitable protective or decorative finish on your project. Here we take a look at some easy wood finishing products and techniques to give your wood projects a quality finish.
Preparation
Preparation is key to achieving the finish that you want. Having the right level of overall constant surface texture will allow you to apply an even coat of finish and obtain a consistent look to your piece. How smooth a wood needs to be to take the finish depends on what kind of finish you are using and the wood it’s being applied to. Harder woods tend to need a smoother but still gently keyed finish.
Work your way down through the grades of abrasive paper until you reach the desired finish. Always use a sanding block on flat and singularly curved surfaces. Compound curves and contours will require you to use a smaller piece of abrasive paper shaped and supported by something that will give a little under pressure, expanded foam is ideal and can be cut to shape and thrown away after use.
Oils And Waxes
Oils and waxes can be the easiest finishes to apply. Generally, they require more than one application. Many applications of oil are required to provide a sheen to the wood. Though not the hardest wearing of finishes they can be obtained in food-safe formulations suitable for use in the kitchen. They can be easily repaired and refreshed when the time comes.
Varnish
Varnish provides a more durable finish to your project. Varnishes are available in different formulations for different purposes. Yacht varnish is a softer more compliant finish that will allow the wood to move and swell a little without cracking the finish. Floor varnishes are harder and more scratch-resistant. Both types of varnish are available in quick-drying water-based formulations as well as more traditional spirit-based products. Gently sanding between coats is generally recommended. Some varnishes require subsequent coats to be applied within a specific time after the first. If using these types of products in your project be sure to plan enough time to complete the job.
