Upcycling is something that has grown in popularity over recent years, but you might be wondering what the reasons are. There are many reasons to upcycle including the cost of furniture & doing your bit for the environment.
Saving Money
Needing a new piece of furniture and being able to afford one are often two different things, which is where upcycling can come in really handy. These days there are lots of places to get cheap (and even free) second-hand furniture, which means that your costs are already much less than if you were to invest in something new. Upcycling means that you can worry less about what the piece looks like and simply about the quality because you’re going to change the look of it anyway. You can even use pieces of furniture you already own but no longer love.
Helping the Environment
Whilst we all know that we could be doing a little more for the environment, it can be hard to know exactly how to do that or where you can make an impact. Giving pieces of furniture a new lease of life and ensuring that you use items already made rather than buying new ones is a positive way to have an impact on the environment in a positive way.
Your Own Personal Style
Decorating your home is a really personal thing and we all have our own ideas when it comes to style and decoration. Upcycling furniture means that you get to create something that is perfect for your home, rather than having to just make do with something in the shop that vaguely looks the way you envisioned.
Getting Involved
The great thing about upcycling is that there are no rules – you can literally create anything you want. If you’re someone that doesn’t consider themselves artistic then there are loads of tutorials and videos online to help get you started. Just remember, it is all about creating something that YOU love so go with your heart rather than sticking to any hard and fast rules.
Brandon Hire Station has recently launched a competition for Primary school-aged children to get involved in upcycling & earn some prizes at the same time – how much fun does it look!?

If you have any thoughts on reasons to upcycle we’d love to hear them.
