Bringing a bit of Caribbean flair to your cuisine is not as hard as you think. Many countries and regions have ingredients that go a long way towards defining the country’s dishes. The Caribbean is no exception, they have included many homegrown herbs and spices as well as imported ones in their cuisine. Many of these ingredients have distinctive flavors that add punch to dishes, others are more subtle flavors, they all combine to give a distinctly Caribbean feel and flavor to dishes. It’s not hard to obtain these key ingredients locally. With many areas having both speciality regional shops but also international supermarkets catering to a wide range of countries cuisine.
Allspice
Allspice is key in Caribbean cuisine. It is not a mix of spices as the name suggests but is actually a small berry. Also known as Pimenta the berries have a flavor that mimics a mixture of Cloves, Cinnamon, and Nutmeg. This essential Caribbean spice is used in many traditional dishes often combined with hotter ingredients like Scotch Bonnet chilies as in Jamaican Jerk seasoning. The berries are dried then ground finely to make Allspice which can be used as an ingredient for spicy dry rubs, marinades, and sauces.
Ginger
Ginger is not a native plant to the Caribbean but is one that has been adopted into their cuisine. With an amazing smell and taste, the ingredient has found its way into the food and also drinks of the Caribbean. Jamaican Ginger Ale is probably the most well-known use, but Ginger is used to bring life to cakes and biscuits as well as more savory dishes. Ginger when combined with other spices will help bring the Caribbean to your table.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is the inner bark of the Ceylon Cinnamon tree. Not originally a Caribbean native it has been adopted into the countries cuisine. Cinnamon brings warmth and a savory flavor to dishes. Often combined with Ginger and Paprica in chicken recipes it is another Caribean staple to add to your spice rack.
Nutmeg
The Caribbean native spice nutmeg is the ground-up seed of the nutmeg tree. Grown widely in the Caribbean the spice is used in many aspects of Caribbean cooking. Nutmeg chicken is a popular dish all across the Caribbean but you will also find nutmeg used in drinks and biscuits.
Cloves
Cloves are traditionally associated with Caribbean thanksgiving celebrations but the spice is found used throughout Caribbean cooking. Traditionally used in ham dishes which are a Caribbean staple the spice is also used in drinks with hot spiced Sorrel.
Garlic
Many country’s cuisines use Garlic, but it is an important part of Caribbean Cuisine used in a lot of dishes. Often combined with ginger it goes well with seafood and is also a key ingredient in Jerk Seasoning.
Paprika
Paprika is used often in Caribbean foods. Many different varieties exist and are sued in different ways to produce wonderful Caribbean flavors. Paprika not only adds heat and flavor to dishes its bright red color brings excitement to how a dish presents itself on the plate.
