Helping Your Child with their Confidence – Everything stems from self-belief and confidence. Without having faith in themselves, children are less likely to take on challenges and reach their full potential. Here is guidance that was put together by a school guidance counsellor on helping children with their confidence.

Helping Your Child with their Confidence

Helping Your Child with their Confidence – Hobbies and Extracurricular Activities

The key is to work on their self-image, or self-esteem. This is how one views themselves and comes from what they know they are good or bad at. Hobbies and extracurricular activities can help children in identifying their strengths and thus help them to grow their self-esteem and confidence.

Helping Your Child with their Confidence –  Be Wise with Your Choice of Words

You can also instil confidence by showing your child that you believe in them. As their parents, your words mean a great deal to them so it’s important that you’re mindful of how you deal with situations. While feedback is good, being overly critical of your child can affect their confidence. Instead, try to be positive by highlighting the good and offering suggestions.

Helping Your Child with their Confidence –  Accepting Their Flaws

No one is perfect and we all have flaws. Helping your child to embrace theirs can make huge strides with regards to their confidence as it’s our insecurities and a fear of them that often holds us back.

Helping Your Child with their Confidence – A Can-Do Attitude

It’s also to do with the way that they look at the world. If they take a pessimistic view, they will more likely be fearful of new challenges and lack the confidence to give things a go. Instead, you should gear your child up to trying new things and promote an optimistic outlook.

Helping Your Child with their Confidence – Setbacks

Failure and setbacks can really affect a child’s confidence and it may take time for them to recover. What’s important is that you’re there to support them. Help them to work through the difficult emotions and gradually push them to try again and be resilient. While it may not make sense to them at this moment, setbacks offer the opportunity to grow and develop. Recognising them can be a pivotal point for children and help them to get back up and regain their confidence.

Helping Your Child with their Confidence – Be a Good Role Model

You’re also a massive part of this. Children naturally look up to their mum and dad as their role models so it’s important that you set a good example. While there are situations that you would much rather avoid, demonstrate your positivity and willingness to give things a go.
