How to Raise an Optimistic Child – There are two ways of looking at life – through a positive or negative lens. You will be surprised at how much this can affect one’s life and your child’s ability to reach their goals. To help them develop an optimistic outlook and succeed in their education, here are a few things that you can do.

Raise an Optimistic Child

Raise an Optimistic Child – Dealing with Low Confidence and Self Esteem

If your child’s a little apprehensive about trying new things, it may be that they lack confidence. Confidence is one of those things that can’t be taught. It’s developed over time through a series of activities – praise, working on their self-esteem, establishing what’s holding them back and helping them to recognise how great they are.

Raise an Optimistic Child

As a place to start, talk to your child about what’s holding them back. If that’s their insecurities, you can work on them together and help them in embracing them. We all have flaws, and they make us human. Praise and words of encouragement will also go a long way in giving them an initial push, and once they have that, they will start believing in themselves.

Raise an Optimistic Child – Mindset

There are opportunities all around us. Even when we fail, there are lessons which can be learned. Raising your child with this belief and the habit to look for silver linings in bad situations can help them in being more optimistic and forthcoming in trying new things.

Raise an Optimistic Child – Lead By Example

Your outlook on life can influence your child’s as children look up to their parents as role models. To help them adopt a positive attitude, it’s important that you also live by the lessons that you’re trying to teach. Think about what there is to gain by putting yourself out there and demonstrate your bravery.

Raise an Optimistic Child – Praise Efforts and Not Success

You’ve probably heard the saying, ‘it’s not the winning but the taking part that counts”. Nothing is truer and the mindset can be incredibly helpful with regards to maintaining their optimism. Failure can be disheartening and as the saying goes, the taking part is what matters. It allows children to gain new experiences and that in itself is a huge win.

Raise an Optimistic Child – Try and Be Less Critical

Whilst feedback is great, being overly critical can destroy a child’s confidence. What’s important is that you are gentle in delivering it, point out their strengths and how they can be even better.
