When we talk about communication and relationships we tend to focus on romantic relationships and why talking to our partner is important. Whilst there is no denying that this is important, there are other relationship types where communication is important, here’s a look at them.

Working Relationships

We tend to spend a good chunk of our week at work, so it makes sense that we are going to want the relationships here to be as open and smooth as possible. It can sometimes feel as though we don’t want to raise issues or concerns because we don’t want to rock the boat, but in the long term this usually just makes things worse. Instead, if you have a worry about how your work is going, an idea you think could be worth implementing or you feel as though your team could be doing something different then talk to everyone involved to stop it from becoming a bigger issue.

Romantic Relationships

Although it is nice to think that we can talk to our partners about everything, the truth is that sometimes it can feel as though it’s embarrassing to talk about certain issues. The Access Doctor have recently launched a campaign to encourage men to talk about problems such as erecticle dysfunction and problems in the bedroom. That is notoriously an area that men prefer not to talk about, which can make things worse and seem like a bigger problem. Instead, those in a relationship should talk about any problems surrounding anything like this & work through things together.

Families

We tend to assume that families just ‘get on’ and that because we share blood that means our relationships are going to be good ones. However, the truth is that families are complicated and if you feel as though your family doesn’t operate the same as everyone else’s – you’re not alone. However, one thing that we can do more of as a family, in general, is talk through any issues and communicate how we are feeling. No one wants to think about upsetting their loved ones, but if there is something on our mind then not talking things through can make things worse.

The truth is that whatever type of relationship you’re thinking about, there are few things that are more important than communication. We definitely could benefit from being a nation that is more open to talking through our feelings & what we are going through. Lots of people still feel as though it is better to hold our head high and not rock the boat but realistically that isn’t what counts. What counts is being able to talk things through and work things out as a team with the people that we’re in a relationship with, to be able to work things out together – and the only want to do this is open and honest communication, even when it can feel as though that is the hardest thing in the world to do.
